
“A total of 25,144 samples from 24,254 individuals have been tested for SARS-CoV2 as on March 25, 8:00 pm,” a joint statement by ICMR and Union Health Ministry said.
“A total of 581 individuals have been confirmed positive among suspected cases and contacts of known positive cases,” it added.
The death toll in India from the deadly illness reached 11 on Wednesday as new cases.
PM Narendra Modi in an address to the nation on Thursday announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown to break the chain of transmission of COVID-19 after India witnessed a spurt in the number of cases in the past few days. He said if not acted upon, the pandemic could set India back by 21 years.
Modi said social distancing and isolation was crucial to fight the contagion which has even overwhelmed the healthcare systems of developed countries like Italy.
It is important to note that a study done by ICMR using a simple mathematical model of infectious disease transmission has revealed that that home quarantine of symptomatic can reduce the overall expected number of cases by 62 per cent and the peak number of cases by 89 per cent
